Jeff VanderMeer grew up in the Fiji Islands and has lived in Florida since the age of nine. His most recent fiction is the NYT-bestselling Southern Reach Trilogy (Annihilation, Authority, and Acceptance), which won the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award, was a finalist for several other awards, and made Entertainment Weekly’s list of the top 10 books of the year. The trilogy prompted The New Yorker to call the author “the weird Thoreau” and has been acquired by publishers in 35 other countries. Paramount Pictures/Scott Rudin Productions will release a movie version of Annihilation directed and written by Alex Garland in 2017. Prior novels include the critically acclaimed Veniss Underground, Shriek: An Afterword, and Finch. His short fiction, collected in Secret Life and The Third Bear, has been praised by Peter Straub, Junot Diaz, and Karen Joy Fowler.

VanderMeer’s nonfiction has appeared in the New York Times, The Guardian, The Washington Post, the Atlantic.com, Esquire.com, New York Magazine online, and the Los Angeles Times. His nonfiction books include Monstrous Creatures (essays), Wonderbook (the world’s first fully illustrated creative writing book), The Steampunk Bible, and The Steampunk User’s Manual. Through his publishing house, Cheeky Frawg, he and his wife Ann have released such critically acclaimed books as Karin Tidbeck’s Jagannath and Leena Krohn’s The Collected Fiction.

With Ann, he has co-edited several iconic anthologies, including The Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases, The New Weird, The Weird, The Time Traveler’s Almanac, and The Big Book of Science Fiction. In addition, VanderMeer has lectured or taught at the Yale Writers’ Conference, the Miami International Book Fair, the University of California (San Diego), the Arthur C. Clarke Center for the Human Imagination, MIT, and the Library of Congress. For nine years he has served as the co-director of Shared Worlds, a unique teen writing camp located at Wofford College. His forthcoming novel from Farrar, Straus and Giroux is titled Borne.

Recently, VanderMeer was named the 2016-2017 the Trias Writer-in-Residence for Hobart-William Smith College in upstate New York.
